UXO Risk Assessment
A UXO risk assessment, is a site-specific report which can determine whether there is potential risk of Unexploded Ordnance (UXO) being found during your project.
To estimate the chances of a UXO hazard being discovered, the explosive ordnance risk assessment process considers several factors, including specific site location, proposed development type, and construction methods being used.
With regards to site location, UXO hazard identification is based on historical information such as previous site development, military history, and wartime bombing records. Conducting a UXO risk assessment on your site also examines specific geology factors and ground conditions, enabling us to understand the depth to which an unexploded bomb may have penetrated.
Information for the detailed UXO risk assessment is gathered from a variety of sources including local authority and national archives, bomb disposal team records, and the national geological survey. This is then supplemented with information held by Fellows in our own archive.
Why choose Fellows International Group?
Here at Fellows, we have a specialist UXO research team dedicated to carrying out each UXO risk assessment, who come armed with expert knowledge, the latest mapping software, and access to key local records.
To complete your UXO risk assessment, the team will first gather information from local record offices, national archives at Kew, and via documents we ourselves hold. This research is then supplemented with specialist geological and environmental knowledge to ensure a full understanding of your site.
Next, we use the latest GIS and mapping software with historical overlays to demonstrate land usage and changes to the built environment over time. This helps in de-risking a site and gives a much better understanding of potential UXO risk and whether an unexploded ordnance survey is required.
Once we have a full picture of your site and the UXO risks that may be present, the Fellows team will produce a reasoned and well-balanced report and will help you decide if a UXO site survey or further mitigation measures should be your next step.
UXO Risk Assessment FAQs
Why do I need a UXO risk assessment?
A UXO risk assessment will help you to understand the risk of finding unexploded ordnance in an area you are looking to develop.
What types of UXO risk assessments are there?
There are two types of UXO risk assessment – preliminary and detailed.
What is a Preliminary Risk Assessment (PRA)?
A PRA is the first step in assessing and mitigating the risk posed by UXO and is usually undertaken at the very start of a project, prior to any intrusive site work. It is based on historical information regarding site location, previous site development, wartime bombing records and military history.
