Civil Engineering Research
The Fellows Research department were recently commissioned to perform a peer review of a third party risk assessment, partly located on a Second World War airfield site. The Fellows Peer Review was able to add a considerable amount of extra details and correct inaccuracies contained within the original 3rd party risk assessment. This allowed a more suitable level of risk mitigation recommendation to be made. As a result of the level of detail contained within the Peer Review the client inquired if it would be possible to perform an interpretation relating to the Second World structures that existed on the site. The was from a civil engineering rather than a potential UXO encounter perspective. By understanding the construction and usage of wartime buildings, it was possible to relate that none were likely to have basements or deep voids below the footprint of buildings. This was a considerable aid to the client in planning works on the site, by removing the need to plan for backfill works or alternative civil engineering solutions.
This example details how flexible and useful research can be in relation to not only potential encounter with UXO but also used for other purposes.
