Bristol Harbour Marine UXO Survey
Fellows were tasked to conduct a Marine UXO survey in Bristol, Somerset to assist a client to achieve ALARP (As low as reasonably practicable) certification. This certification was required before the client was permitted to commence building a walkway along the Bristol Harbour. In order to conduct the survey, Fellows utilised a qualified UXO diver and supervisor cooperatively with a local commercial dive company, UK Diveworks Commercial Limited. Together the two companies conducted a jackstay search, this allows them to utilize an underwater magnetometer to investigate for potential UXO (pUXO).
The first day was used to map the area and ensure the diver covered every meter required. On day two there was 2 pUXO items were detected. This initiated a identification process by the UXO diver. The 2 pUXO’s where later identified as a steel plate and a length of re-bar. The survey was continued for a third day, which lead to its completion. On the third day there were 3 pUXO's detected. These were later identified by the UXO diver as a scaffold pole, a length of re-bar and a section of Heras fencing.
The survey completed and the client was issued with the report and an ALARP certification. This certification meant that the construction of the walkway could now commence in the Bristol Harbour.
